Gary David, PhD

Gary David, PhD, is an epistemologist, educator, and former professional jazz musician who applies General Semantics and Epistemics to human awareness, learning, and emotional processes.

Background & Mentorship
  • J. Samuel Bois: Apprenticed and studied with epistemologist J. Samuel Bois from 1964 to 1978, later editing his textbook The Art of Awareness: A Handbook on Epistemics and General Semantics. [1, 2, 3]

  • Education: Received his Ph.D. in Epistemics from the Union Institute and University in 1975. [1]

  • Music Background: Spent 20 years as a professional jazz musician and leader of the vocal-instrumental group The Sound of Feeling. [1, 2, 3]

  • Continuum Movement: Married movement innovator Emilie Conrad in 1975, collaborating closely with her and providing music and epistemic teachings for the Continuum Movement. [1, 2]

Core Work & Epistemic Counseling

  • Epistemics: Focuses on how humans form knowledge, evaluate their experiences, and recognize self-reflexivity rather than treating epistemology as abstract philosophy. [1, 2]

  • Affect Theory: Integrates Silvan Tomkins’ affect-script psychology and the biology of human emotion into his work with individuals and groups. [1, 2]

  • Practice & Teaching: Maintains a private counseling and consulting practice, co-founded Philosphere Publishers, and conducts workshops and forums such as “The Art of Learning”. [1, 2, 3]

This page that will grow to include more of Gary’s work, our dialogues, and eventually an AI proxy of his mind.  In the meantime the beginnings of our relationship is sketched on the Tomkins and Steinbeck: What A Shame page. He is also discussed or referred to in these pages.
